Real-world asset tokenization

Real-world assets, brought onchain.

Universal DeFi is building a single platform to tokenize real-world and financial assets, from onboarding the issuer to issuing the token that represents their asset.

The platform

Onboarding and issuance, in one place.

Universal DeFi plans to offer issuers a single service: onboard the asset, then create and issue the token that represents it. It will start with a limited set of real-world assets that are simpler to tokenize.

1

Onboard

Confirm the issuer's identity, screen for illicit activity, and verify that they own the asset, under KYC and AML rules.

Done once, before issuance
2

Issue

Create and issue the token that represents the asset, in a separate environment kept for that project.

One environment per project
3

Control

The issuer holds the approvals needed to move the token, and can mint or burn it.

The issuer stays in control
4

List

If the issuer wants, Universal DeFi can help list the token or make introductions to liquidity providers.

Control & security

No single participant can act alone.

Universal DeFi plans to secure each token with multi-party computation: the authority to approve a transaction is split across several parties, so none of them can act on their own. Every token project gets its own environment.

  • The issuer holds the keysThe issuer controls its own environment and holds the approvals needed to authorize transactions affecting its token.
  • Run by a security specialistThe control layer is provided by a third-party digital-asset security provider, with a separate environment for each project.
  • Recovery is built inThe design is expected to include disaster-recovery services to restore access in certain failure scenarios.

Recovery
A transaction goes through only when the required parties act together. If those approvals are lost, control of the token can be lost with them.
Asset types

Starting with the assets that are simplest to tokenize.

The platform is meant to support a wide range of assets over time. It will begin with a limited number of real-world assets.

Commodities

Precious metals

Physical goods like precious metals, where the platform can confirm ownership and represent it as a token.

Ownership confirmed at onboarding
Collectibles

Collectibles

Real-world items whose ownership is verified at onboarding, before a token is issued.

Ownership confirmed at onboarding
Compliance

Reviewed jurisdiction by jurisdiction.

Rules for tokenized and digital assets are new and still changing. Universal DeFi plans to check what applies in each jurisdiction.

Issuer level

KYC & AML at onboarding

The platform verifies identity, screens for illicit activity, and confirms ownership before a token is issued.

Holder level

Left to the issuer

The issuer is responsible for checks on individual token holders. Universal DeFi may offer identity tools where a jurisdiction requires them.

By asset & region

Depends on the asset

Whether a token counts as a security, a commodity, or something else depends on the underlying asset and the jurisdiction.

Frequently asked questions

It's representing ownership of a real-world or financial asset as a digital token recorded on a blockchain, a shared record kept across many computers at once, with no single controlling authority.

The platform is designed to support a range of asset types, which may include commodities such as precious metals and other assets such as collectibles. It will start with a limited number of real-world assets that are simpler to tokenize.

The issuer. It keeps sole control of its token, including the ability to create more (minting) or remove some from circulation (burning).

A way of securing a digital asset where the authority to approve a transaction is split across several parties or systems, so no single participant can act alone.

No. Universal DeFi does not intend to provide brokerage, custody, fund administration, transfer-agent, or trading-venue services, and it does not act as a market maker or provide liquidity. It provides the onboarding and the technology to tokenize an asset.

Not yet. The platform is in development and has not started operating. What's described here reflects current plans, which may change.
